Why?

In English translations, generally, the term "abandonment" (Überlassung, Verlassenheit) is used for "Gelassenheit"! And "detachment" - for "Abgeschiedenheit"! Metaphors are replaced by purely logical notions. How can reasonable people communicate with such conceptual discrepancies? "Die Philosophie ist ein Kampf gegen die Verhexung unseres Verstandes durch die Mittel unserer Sprache" - Wittgenstein.

No other language offers such a freedom to create abstract concepts as the German! The German language is lucky enough with its verb "sein"; only in German it is possible to exploit all the variations of the corresponding Greek verb (which stems from the numeral "one" and thus is a major part of the Greek interest for it in philosophy; note that the Chinese language has no verb "to be" - that's why our European jargon about "being" remains fully cryptic for them! - "die Sprache ist das Haus des Seins" - Heidegger).

Now I ask by myself, for what we need a subforum, where you can talk in english although we are in a german forum? Is there a deeper reason or just a possibility to learn better english Zwinker .
If the second possibility is the reason, then is it a good chance for me to improve my english ...

Interesting: Hegel said German and Greek are the only languages to philosophize.
--> So I think this english-speaking subforum is just to improve our english skills and maybe to welcome people from non-german countries.

Hegel said German and Greek are the only languages to philosophize.

ok... but a greek subforum might be difficult to keep frequented by users... so this english forum seems like the best option regarding the endeavours of the administration to provide non german speaking people to take part on philosophical discussions großes Grinsen

now, let´s not get carried away. In case foreigners do really skim through this english sub-topic, they deserve getting acquainted with "german" philosophical attitudes and ideas. I recommend we stop talking about languages and get "acquainted" ourselves Zwinker
